Pulley

noun

A wheel with a groove for a rope or cable. A pulley lets you change the direction of a pull — and if you combine several pulleys, you can lift heavy things with much less force than their weight.

A simple machine consisting of a wheel on an axle, with a grooved rim for a rope, belt, or cable. A single fixed pulley redirects force without mechanical advantage; movable pulleys and block-and-tackle systems trade distance for force, so pulling a long length of rope a small distance can lift a heavy load a short distance. Pulleys are one of the six classical simple machines defined in ancient mechanics.
