A rotating mechanical element with cut teeth that meshes with another toothed element to transmit torque. The gear ratio between two meshed gears — the ratio of their tooth counts — determines the trade-off between rotational speed and torque: gearing down multiplies force but reduces speed, and vice versa. Gears come in many geometries (spur, helical, bevel, worm, planetary) each suited to different shaft arrangements and load cases.
