Hazard

noun

Something that could cause harm if things go wrong. A hazard isn't the same as a disaster — it's the possibility of one. Part of an engineer's job is spotting hazards early, so the disaster never happens.

In risk assessment, a hazard is a source of potential harm. Hazard is distinguished from risk: hazard is the thing itself (the volcano, the unstable slope, the live wire), while risk combines hazard with exposure and vulnerability (how many people could be affected, and how badly). Good hazard mapping is the first step in any serious emergency-planning process.
