When a volcano releases rock, ash, gas, or lava at the surface. Eruptions can be a quiet ooze of lava or a violent blast that sends ash kilometres into the sky. They can last hours, or they can last years.

The release of magma, gas, or pyroclastic material from a volcano onto the surface. Volcanologists classify eruptions by style — effusive (flowing lava, low explosivity), strombolian (small bursts), vulcanian (larger explosions), plinian (sustained ash columns reaching the stratosphere) — and by magnitude using the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI), a scale from 0 to 8. Each step up the VEI scale represents roughly ten times the ejected volume of the one below.
